A Guide to Google Ad Grants

Unlock Your Church's Reach: A Casual Guide to Google Ad Grants (and How We Can Help!)

Hey there! Ever heard of the Google Ad Grant? It’s basically free advertising money from Google, just for non-profits. And guess what? Churches in the UK are totally eligible! We're talking up to $10,000 USD per month in advertising credit to help you reach more people online. Pretty amazing, right?

But navigating the world of Google Ads can feel a bit like learning a new language. That's where we come in! At Church Academy, we understand the unique needs of churches, and we're here to guide you through every step of getting, setting up, and managing your Google Ad Grant, making sure your message is always out there.

Let's dive into how you can get started and how to make the most of this incredible opportunity!

First Off: Are You Eligible?

Good news! Most UK churches are. Here’s the lowdown:

  • You need to be a registered charity in the UK or an HMRC exempt charity. This is super important! Google for Nonprofits, which is your gateway to the Ad Grant, partners with Goodstack (formerly TechSoup UK) to verify your charity status.
  • You can't be a government entity, hospital, or school (though their philanthropic arms might be eligible).
  • You must have a high-quality, fully functioning website that uses HTTPS (the secure one!). This is non-negotiable for Google.
  • Your website can't make a profit, and it needs to clearly outline your mission.

If you tick these boxes, you’re off to a great start!

Getting Your Grant: The Application Journey

The application process has a few steps, but don't worry, it's totally manageable, especially with a little help!

  1. Get Verified: Your first stop is Goodstack UK. They’ll verify your charity status. This is a crucial step!
  2. Apply for Google for Nonprofits: Once verified by Goodstack, you can apply for a Google for Nonprofits account. This is your hub for all Google's non-profit programs, including the Ad Grant.
  3. Activate the Ad Grant: Once your Google for Nonprofits account is approved, you can then apply specifically for the Google Ad Grant. You’ll need to agree to their terms and conditions, and show them your awesome, functional website.

Feeling overwhelmed? This is precisely where Church Academy shines! We can walk you through the Goodstack verification, help with your Google for Nonprofits application, and ensure you tick all the boxes for the Ad Grant activation. No more head-scratching!

Crafting Ads That Get Approved (and Get Results!)

This is where being "clever" comes in. Google has rules, especially for religious organizations. The main one? Your ads should be "non-proselytizing." This means focusing on your community, services, events, and helpful resources, rather than trying to convert people to a specific faith through your ads.

Here’s how to make your ads shine and get approved:

  • Focus on Community: Think about what people are searching for. "Churches near me," "community events," "food bank assistance," "youth groups," "marriage counseling," "support groups," "Sunday service times" are all great examples.
  • Be Clear and Direct: Use strong, clear calls to action like "Find a Service," "Join Our Community," "Get Support Here," "Volunteer Today."
  • Avoid Generic Keywords: Steer clear of single, super generic words like "church" alone. Instead, use longer, more specific phrases like "family-friendly church in Manchester" or "church music events London." This helps you reach people looking for exactly what you offer.
  • Geo-Targeting is Your Friend: Make sure your ads only show up to people in your local area. No point advertising your London church to someone in Scotland!
  • Match Your Landing Page: Whatever your ad promises, your website page it links to must deliver immediately. If your ad says "Sunday Service Times," the link should go straight to that page, not your homepage.

Church Academy's Secret Sauce: We specialize in crafting compliant and effective ad copy and keyword strategies. We know the nuances of Google's policies for churches, helping you create ads that get approved and connect with the right people, all while staying within the "non-proselytizing" guidelines.

Setting Up Your Google Ads Account for Success

Once you have the grant, it’s time to set up your Google Ads account.

  • The Budget: You get $10,000 USD per month in ad credit! It's a lot, but remember it's credit, not cash.
  • Bidding Strategies: Historically, there was a $2 bid cap, but with modern "Smart Bidding" strategies like "Maximize Conversions" (which is highly recommended for the grant), that cap is lifted! This is fantastic because it lets Google's AI optimize for real results.
  • Conversion Tracking is a MUST: For Smart Bidding to work, you must set up conversion tracking. This tells Google what a valuable action is on your website (e.g., someone signing up for your newsletter, contacting you, or finding your directions). Without it, Google can’t optimize effectively.
  • Structure Your Campaigns Wisely: Aim for at least 2 active ad groups per campaign, and make sure each ad group has at least 2 responsive search ads. This gives Google more options to show the best ad.
  • Embrace Performance Max (PMax): Google is pushing PMax campaigns for Ad Grants from 2025. These are powerful, AI-driven campaigns that use various Google channels (Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover) to find your audience. You'll need to provide high-quality text, image, and even video assets.

At Church Academy, we don't just help you get the grant; we help you set it up right! From correctly linking your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) for conversion tracking to structuring your campaigns and leveraging Performance Max, we provide the hands-on guidance to build a robust and effective ad account.

Staying Active & Compliant: Keep That Grant Rolling!

Getting the grant is great, but keeping it is key! Google has a few important rules to make sure you're using the grant effectively:

  • Maintain a 5% Click-Through Rate (CTR): This means that for every 100 times your ad is shown, at least 5 people should click on it. If your CTR consistently dips below this, your grant could be suspended.
  • No Super Generic or Single-Word Keywords: Again, focus on specificity! There are very few exceptions to this.
  • Pause Low-Quality Keywords: If a keyword has a Quality Score of 1 or 2, pause it! It's not performing well and can hurt your overall account.
  • Active Conversion Tracking: You need to be logging at least one conversion per month if you're using Smart Bidding. This proves your ads are driving valuable actions.
  • Annual Program Survey: You'll need to complete a survey each year to stay in the program.

If you don't follow these rules, Google can (and will!) temporarily suspend or even revoke your grant.

This is perhaps the most crucial area where Church Academy offers ongoing support. We can actively manage your Google Ad Grant for you, monitoring your CTR, keyword performance, and conversion tracking. Our goal is to ensure your ads are always active, always compliant, and always making the most of that $10,000 monthly credit, allowing you to focus on your ministry!
